Messiah ben David

The Promised King

A short reflection on the promised King from David’s line and the fullness of Messiah’s mission.

The hope of Messiah ben David is one of the clearest Messianic hopes in our Scriptures.

God promised that a ruler would come from David’s line. The prophets spoke of a righteous Branch, a shepherd over Israel, a King who would reign with justice and righteousness, and one whose kingdom would not pass away.

This is the Messiah many of our people expect. And rightly so.

Messiah will reign. Messiah will restore. Messiah will bring the kingdom of God into fullness. He will not merely teach Israel. He will rule. He will not merely inspire the nations. He will have authority over them.

The Hebrew Scriptures do not present Messiah as a weak figure. They present Him as King.

But our Scriptures also reveal that Messiah’s mission includes suffering before glory. That is where many stumble.

They expect the Son of David to reign, but they do not expect Him to first be rejected. They expect the crown, but they do not expect the sacrifice. They expect the kingdom, but they do not see that sin must be dealt with before restoration is complete.

Yeshua came from David’s line. He was born in Bethlehem, the city of David. He was called Son of David. He entered Jerusalem as Zechariah said the King would come: humble and riding on a donkey.

He came as King, but not first to take the throne by force. He came first to deal with sin.

This does not weaken His claim. It completes the picture.

The Hebrew Scriptures show us both the suffering Servant and the reigning King. Yeshua fulfills both.

He came first in humility. He will come again in glory.

The Son of David has come. His kingdom has begun. And the day is coming when His reign will be seen by all.
